Superior Court Targeted Juvenile and Family Law Facilities Master Plan
King County Superior Court administers justice and related services for legal matters in civil, criminal, juvenile, and family courts. The Superior Court Targeted Facilities Master Plan (FMP) effort is focused on the facility needs for the resolution of legal disputes involving children and families. The proceedings resulting from these disputes can be complex and demanding, with a high priority of keeping families whole while acting in the best interest of the children involved.
This Superior Court Targeted Facilities Master Plan is the culmination of nearly two years of work compiling, studying and reviewing the space needs for King County Superior Court's juvenile and family law functions. The FMP provides detailed information on several potential scenarios for redeveloping King County's Youth Services Center, located at 12th and Alder in Seattle's Central District. These Alder scenarios represent a range of possibilities for future court facilities on the site, from replacement of the current Youth Services Center building to complete co-location of all North King County family law and juvenile courts.
The Superior Court Targeted Facilities Master Plan final report was transmitted to the King County Council on Thursday May 14, 2009. Following a series of in-depth hearings on the project information and facility scenarios, the council approved the FMP on December 14, 2009 in Motion 13106.
Motion 13106 affirmed the goal of co-locating all juvenile offender and Northend juvenile dependency and family court matters involving children as envisioned in Alder Scenario 5.5, along with requesting a report on specific additional project information. Executive and Superior Court staff are working through the requested information for transmittal to council by March 31, 2010.
