Community Transformation Grant
September 2011 update
On September 27, 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the awards for the Community Transformation Grants. In the first round of CTG grants, the decision is that Washington state will receive four awards -- awards for the State, Tacoma-Pierce, and two Tribes, but King County will not be funded. Please see: www.cdc.gov/communitytransformation/funds
Given that CDC has already invested $25.5 million in King County with Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) and none in the rest of the state, from an equity perspective this decision makes good sense. There were many other CPPW cities that, like Seattle/KingCounty, did not receive funding as part of Community Transformation Grants. King County's CPPW activities continue through March 2012, and there will be substantial new funding for more Community Transformation Grants in the federal fiscal year starting October 2011.
Thank you to all partners, grantees, Healthy King County Coalition, staff and the Leadership Team for the continued support and commitment to make King County healthier for all residents.
Background
In May 2011, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) released a request for Community Transformation Grant (CTG) proposals to improve health in communities across the U.S. through tobacco-free living, active living and healthy eating, and increasing the use of high quality clinical preventive services.
Public Health - Seattle & King County (Public Health) submitted a proposal for $20 million over five years to implement changes that will make healthy choices easier for King County residents, while preventing diseases like diabetes and cancer. Rather than providing direct services like doctor visits or one-on-one health education, the Community Transformation Grants focus on changing the communities we live in to make it easier to be healthy, like by having healthier foods in schools.
