Free flu shots on December 9, 2007

KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON - Free seasonal influenza shots will be provided by Public Health – Seattle & King County on Sunday, December 9th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Delridge and Renton Community Centers. Public Health is once again practicing its ability to vaccinate large numbers of people as part of emergency preparedness activities. One thousand adult doses and 200 child doses will be available at each of the community centers on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year, volunteers from the Public Health Reserve Corps will be assisting Public Health at the flu drill. The Public Health Reserve Corps is a group of volunteers prescreened and trained to augment Public Health staff during an emergency in King County.

Who should get the flu vaccine:

Influenza vaccine is for anyone who wants to reduce the chance of getting the flu. Flu shots are especially recommended for people over 50, for children between six months and five years, for pregnant women or women who are intending to get pregnant during flu season, and for people with ongoing health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

Flu season typically runs from fall through spring, so it is not too late to get the flu vaccine.  Each year in the United States over 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from complications from the flu.
