Community comes together for Columbia City Walks!

KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON - This Saturday, May 13, families and community organizations will join in Columbia City Walks!, a street fair celebration in Columbia City to promote health and well-being.

Columbia City Walks!
Saturday, May 13th 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Columbia City Business District in Seattle, kicking off at Columbia City Park on Rainier Ave S. and S. Edmunds.

Activities for the whole family include:

  • 15 demonstrations inside local businesses to learn about and sign up for classes in yoga, tai chi, weight lifting, walking and Capoeira, among others
  • performances by local groups, including music by Passage, The Connection & Brock Boehm
  • historical walking tours and a climb up Hitt’s Hill
  • nutrition and health information from 28 local organizations
  • free health screenings, including diabetes and blood pressure screening

“Let’s get informed and take actions that will make a positive difference in the health of our families and our communities,” said King County Executive Ron Sims, an event speaker. Southeast Seattle, including Columbia City, is one of the areas of the county most impacted by the burden of chronic diseases such as diabetes and asthma.

Columbia City Walks! is sponsored by King County Steps to Health, University of Washington Health Promotion Research Center, Puget Sound Neighborhood Health Centers, Seattle Parks & Recreation, Sound Steps, Public Health - Seattle & King County and other local organizations.

Earlier in the day before Columbia City Walks!, King County Steps to Health will join with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in launching the HealthierUS/HealthierUS Veterans programs. This earlier event begins at 9 a.m. at the Seattle Division of VA Puget Sound Health Care System, 1660 South Columbian Way, in Seattle.
