Public meeting to discuss proposed on-site sewage fees

Wednesday, March 13, 2002

KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON - Public Health - Seattle & King County will be holding a public meeting Thursday, March 21st from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM to discuss amending of fees for the on-site sewage program.

The meeting will be held at:

Eastgate Public Health Center
14350 S.E. Eastgate Way, Bellevue

Background

In order to protect public health, county and state code requires local health departments to implement plans to periodically monitor on-site sewage systems (OSS) within their jurisdictions to assure that the OSS owner properly maintains and operates the OSS. In addition, state regulations require local health departments to provide educational materials and OSS operation and maintenance information to OSS owners.

As a result of extensive discussions with key stakeholders in potentially affected communities as well as suggestions taken from previous public meetings, Public Health is offering for consideration two new fees which would fund these legally-mandated activities:

  • $40 increase in OSS Construction Permit fees for new systems;
  • $40 fee for every real estate transaction of properties served by an on-site sewage system.

The funds generated would be dedicated solely to meeting the costs of the mandated activities, including OSS operation and maintenance monitoring activities, provide educational workshops and distribute operation and maintenance literature.

The OSS Operation and Maintenance Program was previously funded by a two-year grant from King County Department of Natural Resources. This funding expired December 31, 2001.
