Women can reduce their risk for cancer (and feel better too). Cancer risk reduction guidelines include:
- Avoid all tobacco products;
- Exercise;
- Eat less fat and more fruit, vegetables, and whole grains; and,
- Drink less alcohol
Women age 40 years and older should have a Mammogram and Clinical Breast Examination every year. All women should practice monthly Breast self-examinations.
Early detection of breast cancer (and other cancers) is the best protection.
In King County, approximately 75% of women with annual incomes of less than $10,000 have ever had a mammogram and clinical breast examination compared to 93% of women with annual incomes greater than $50,000. The percentages are much more disparate (52% / 86%) for those reporting a mammogram and clinical breast examination during the past two years.
