KENT, WASHINGTON - Today, Public Health's Medic One staff along with the Kent Fire Department have assessed approximately 50 people potentially affected by the commercial fire at Chemcentral in Kent (7601 South 190th Street). None were found to have serious health consequences, and most did not require treatment.

Those in the vicinity of the fire may smell an odor from the blaze. Some people may experience eye and throat irritation; however, they will not likely experience long term health consequences from this incident.

Anyone with a history of respiratory illness or those who are experiencing discomfort are advised to stay indoors. Those with general medical questions about related symptoms should notify their doctor or call the Valley Medical Center Information Line at 425-656-4636. Anyone experiencing serious health problems should call 911.

The fire has now been contained, and the Environmental Protection Agency continues to monitor air quality downwind of the site. The materials that burned were predominantly petro-chemicals, which produce carbon as the result of incomplete combustion. This condition is similar in nature to that of an air inversion, which produces a stagnant layer of air. Public Health's Medic One will remain available for those needing assistance.
