HIV Prevention Counseling Training

Objectives

This training will assist health care providers and others who work with people at risk for HIV to develop the skills necessary to provide HIV testing and prevention counseling.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Assist individuals to recognize their personal HIV risk.
  • Assist individuals in creating a risk reduction plan.
  • Discuss serologic testing for antibodies to HIV.
  • Counsel individuals with seronegative and seropositive test results using the presented guides.
  • Discuss and arrange for the notification of sex and/or needle sharing partners of individuals who have seropositive test results.
  • Note: This training does not teach venipuncture or the mechanics of administering rapid tests.
Format

NOTE: This training requires in-person attendance in Seattle, WA. This is not a web-based course.

Lectures, audio-visuals, role plays, discussions, and demonstrations. Up-to-date manual and reference guides are provided.

Individuals should register for the HIV Prevention Counseling Training if the agency they work for meets any of the following criteria:

  • Receives federal funding to support programs providing HIV counseling/testing and partner notification services;
  • Receives federal funding support indirectly through the use of the WA State Public Health Lab for HIV testing;
  • Receives state funding for the direct support of individual staff members providing HIV counseling/testing and/or partner notification services;
  • Serves significant numbers of high-risk individuals.
2012 dates

All trainings are scheduled 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Participants should plan to leave no earlier than 5:00 PM each day.

How to register

Pre-registration is required.

Trainings are limited to 15 persons. Enrollment priority is given to persons who provide HIV prevention counseling and testing services as a part of their employment.

Fees:

  • $130/person, with a discount rate of $100/person for 3 or more people from the same agency attending the same workshop
  • Fee is payable when enrollment is confirmed.
  • Cancellations must be made 5 days prior to the scheduled course for which you are confirmed. Refunds will not be made for less than 5 days notice of cancellation or for "no shows."
