The King County Board of Health is accepting applications to fill one open health professional position. This non-paid volunteer position will be filled by a health professional who is a resident of King County. Please share this information with others that may be interested in serving in this capacity.
The King County Board of Health is composed of ten voting members and one non-voting member. Eight of the eleven Board members are elected officials – three from the Metropolitan King County Council, three from the Seattle City Council and two elected officials from the Suburban Cities of King County. The three remaining members are health professionals. The health professional members serve as citizen public health experts, assisting the Board with complex, often technical, public health issues.
The open health professional position has a term of service of one year, and according to the Board of Health Operating Rules (4/09), "Beginning on January 1, 2011, the term of a health professional member is established as three years and the health professional member may serve a maximum of three terms." Board procedure requires that an open competitive process be conducted for health professional member seats; therefore we are actively soliciting applications from qualified persons.
Under state law, the Board has "supervision over all matters pertaining to the preservation of life and health of the people within its jurisdiction." Specific powers and duties of the Board include: enforcement through the local health officer, state public health statutes and rules; enacting local public health rules and regulations; providing for the control and prevention of infectious disease; and, establishing fee schedules for licenses, permits, and other services.
The Board of Health meets once a month, on the third Thursday of each month beginning at 1:30 p.m. Members are occasionally asked to serve on subcommittees, which are created as needed. The Board of Health usually meets in the King County Council Chamber in downtown Seattle. There is no remuneration for Board membership. Parking on meeting days is available at no cost to Board members. Health Professional Members, upon appointment and annually thereafter, must file a "Statement of Financial and Other Interests" with the King County Board of Ethics.
Those interested should submit responses by following the instructions below by November 3, 2009.
