Building Social Support

Building Social SupportHaving social support means that you feel connected and cared for by other people. This helps to reduce stress and relapses.

Social support can come from family members, friends, peers, spouses, boyfriends/girlfriends, co-workers, members of religious or other spiritual groups, classmates, neighbors, mental health practitioners, and members of peer support groups.

Some of the best ways to build social support, to meet people and make friends, is to get involved in your community. This can include taking classes and participating in recreational activities and in volunteering for causes you believe in. Check out the pages for Community, Volunteering, Citizenship and Getting out.

King County is fortunate to have an on-line support community for people interested in mental health recovery. This group was created by and is entirely managed by people who participate in mental health services in King County. Please read this document for more information and how to join the conversation.

Let your mental health worker know if you would like to add building social supports to your mental health recovery plan.
