Community Access Services
Retirement services for individuals with developmental disabilities are called Community Access Services. Community Access services are for people with developmental disabilities ages 62 and older who:
- have retired, or
- have never worked and don’t want a job.
These services will:
- assist individuals to participate in activities, events and organizations in the local community in ways similar to others of retirement age
- provide the support necessary to build and strengthen relationships between family members and members of the local community who are not paid to be with the individual
- find places where an individual’s interests, culture, talents, and gifts can be contributed and shared with others with similar interests
- provide opportunities for people to do things they enjoy as well as new and interesting things
- support participation in clubs, associations, and organizations as members and in decision-making capacities.

King County Funded Integrated Senior Services Project
The Northshore Senior Center in Bothell manages a project designed to connect older adults with developmental disabilities to senior center services. Center staff work individually with adults to help them identify their interests, gifts and needs and then to involve them in activities of their choice. These activities may include, but are not limited to: arts programs, physical activities, the Health Enhancement Program, clubs, outings, support groups, special events, meals, committees and volunteer opportunities. The Center is open seven days a week from 8:30 – 4:30, with occasional evening programs. In addition to programs in Bothell, activities are scheduled in Kenmore, Woodinville and Mill Creek. The Center recruits and trains volunteers to ensure that each participant’s experience is comfortable and fulfilling. These volunteers meet and greet project participants, introduce them to other members and ensure they are safe and comfortable while at the Center.
