2009 comments by former County Executive Ron Sims

"Good evening and welcome to the 22nd annual Paul Robeson Scholar Athlete Awards ceremony. I am sorry that I cannot be with you, but I am pleased to have this opportunity to congratulate our distinguished scholars.

"Tonight, we honor you, more than 900 youth from throughout King County who have found a healthy balance between academic studies and athletic and dance activities. Being an exceptional athlete is a great accomplishment, but if you are also academically driven to succeed, you potential is infinite. With strong minds, you can have profound impact and in this world, in this country, and in your communities.

"This award is named in honor of the accomplished African-American Paul Robeson. He was an athlete, singer, activist, actor, and scholar. He advocated for the civil rights of people around the world, and he knew the importance of a strong education.

"The Paul Robeson Scholar-Athlete Awards is a program that is very special to me. While I am no longer County Executive, it is my hope that the Paul Robeson Scholar-Athlete Awards will continue in the years to come. I believe in providing motivators that encourage our children to work hard and excel. Like your parents, coaches, and teachers, I have always found it personally rewarding to witness the magical metamorphasis that happens when our children realize that we believe in their talent and their abilities. As I congratulation you tonight, know that I believe in you. I believe in your potential, I belive in your future.

"Congratulations again. You are the leaders of tomorrow, and I challenge you to continue to dream big, and work hard, and succeed. Peace and prosperity to you all."
