Scholar athletes honored at 23rd annual Paul Robeson Awards

24th Annual Paul Robeson Awards Ceremony - 2011Paul Robeson: on hold

Due to the difficult economic climate, it is with sadness that we have made the decision to place the 2011 Paul Robeson Program on hold until further notice. We are working to find new resources, sponsors and community partners to continue this valuable program, which has been a motivational tool for countless young scholar-athletes during its 24 year run.

If you have any questions or ideas for partnerships that might help enable a new future for the program, please email Cheeketa Mabone or call her at 206-263-9629.

The 23rd Annual Paul Robeson Awards Ceremony - 2010

A crowd of more than 1,400 kids, parents and community supporters cheered and clapped for each of 750 winners at the 2010 Paul Robeson awards, which honor kids for for both their academic as well as their athletic achievements. See a gallery of images from the event here.

King County Executive Dow Constantine kicked off the program, which featured kids as young as first grade age, up to high school sophomores. All had maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or more for the entire school year while also participating in sports or dance activities.

It’s been more than 30 years since the passing of the award’s namesake Paul Robeson, who was lauded in life for his intelligence, work ethic, and multiple skills: professional athlete, lawyer, bass-baritone concert singer, stage and film actor, writer, and social activist.

His example of academic success coupled with athletic and performance skills were beautifully represented in the thousands of nominations that poured in for kids from King, Pierce and Snohomish County.
