What ARRA funding opportunities are most important to King County?
King County is interested in competitive funding opportunities that:
- create or preserve jobs in King County;
- specifically address or seek to rectify funding shortfalls in the 2009 adopted county budget for those programs that do not have twelve-month funding;
- promote public safety by providing funds for county law enforcement, prosecution, courts and public defense;
- sustain essential public health programs, consistent with the adopted public health operational master plan;
- support essential regional human services, such as:
- public housing and homeless shelters;
- improving safety conditions for the people of King County through maintenance or replacement of antiquated buildings or other structures;
- addressing inefficient transportation infrastructure;
- improving or replacing antiquated emergency management communications and technology;
- sustaining public transit operations or improving transit equipment;
- improving energy efficiency of county operations and county facilities;
- or, water quality, wastewater treatment

What is the difference between formula and competitive grants?
Formula grants are allocated through a certain percentage or formula that is set in law. Competitive grants are applied for through a solicitation process from federal agencies.
What is the difference between funding that is managed directly and funding that is passed-through?
Direct management grants are awarded directly to the jurisdiction (county) from the federal government to fund selected programs or projects. Pass-through funding is channeled through state agencies and/or regional government bodies before being allocated to the jurisdiction (county).
Is there someone at King County who monitors stimulus grant opportunities to ensure that our county maximizes our funding?

What types of programs will not be funded?
Federal stimulus funding cannot be used for casinos or other gambling establishments, aquariums, zoos, golf courses or swimming pools.

Recovery.kingcounty.gov is a website that offers the public the ability to identify federal stimulus grants that King County government is seeking and the progress of those grant applications. The website will be updated monthly to reflect each grant’s status, as well as any additional grants that King County has applied for.
