Emerging issues
King County is actively involved with emerging issues that potentially impact aquatic life and wildlife. We recognize that the issues listed below are of national and international scope, and are beyond the capability of a local agency or utility to solve alone. Typically, studies continue for many years before definitive answers are known and regulations adopted. King County understands public interest and concerns about these issues, so as we learn more, we will respond to recommendations and amend regulations as needed.
- Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment--
New information is emerging about the natural and synthetic chemicals people dispose of every day in their sinks and toilets. While scientists nationally and internationally study the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals, King County is taking several preventive steps to protect public health and the environment. - Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) (external link)--
Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals are present in our nation's waterbodies. Further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. The EPA is committed to investigating this topic and developing strategies to help protect the health of both the environment and the public. To date, scientists have found no evidence of adverse human health effects from PPCPs in the environment.
