clipboardNear neighbor surveys: Magnolia/Renton

Since 2002, the county's Wastewater Treatment Division has commissioned a Near Neighbor survey to get feedback on the West Point Treatment Plant in Seattle and the South Treatment Plant in Renton from the people who live and work nearby. The 24-question survey is conducted by an independent research firm that randomly polls 35 businesses and 100 residents in each community.

2011 survey summary

- Awareness of the wastewater treatment plants continues to be higher among Magnolia residents and businesses than among Renton residents and businesses.

- Since 2009, awareness of the Renton wastewater treatment facility has almost doubled among Renton businesses.

- A strong majority of Renton and Magnolia residents and Magnolia businesses say the treatment plants are good neighbors. More than half of Renton businesses (60%) don’t know if the plant has been a good neighbor, which is mostly tied to lack of awareness of the plant.

- The most commen reasons cited for why the plants are good neighbors are the lack of any problems generally, no offending odor, and attractive landscaping.

- Only one in five (17% to 21%) say they have experienced a negative impact from the treatment plants in their area.

- New odor control methods and 24 hour responsiveness to concerns and questions continue to be the highest priorities residents think King County should explore.

Questions enable respondents to describe their perceptions of our plants, and to share both positive and negative opinions about how they're operated. People also have an opportunity to rank the county's priorities and offer suggestions on how the county can improve.

The survey helps us understand how we're meeting our Balanced Scorecard goals in the Customer Service quadrant, and to give our neighbors a chance to tell us how we measure up to community standards.

WTD used to conduct the survey annually, and made a decision in 2007 to do it every two years as a cost-saving measure. We will commission the next survey in 2013.
