Adult Salmon Monitoring 2010 - Community Salmon Investigation (CSI): Highline
Miller and Walker Creeks Stewardship

How many adult salmon return to Miller and Walker Creeks in Burien, Normandy Park, and SeaTac each year?  Volunteer salmon investigators with CSI:  Highline began surveys in 2010 to find out!  They are also investigating how many of the returning salmon survive long enough to spawn.

Adult Fish Carcasses: Pre-Spawn Mortality Evaulation October 8, 2010 - December 23, 2010
How do you read the data in the downloadable table? The first salmon carcass of the season (bottom row) was found on October 13, 2010 at the Lower Miller Creek Survey Location (see "notes" below the Live Adult Salmon Observations table for description of all four survey locations). It was a female fish and she had 100% of her eggs, which allows us to conclude she died "pre-spawn" ("PSM"). Alternatively, she could have died "post-spawn" ("POST"), been preyed upon so heavily we can't determine if she spawned or not ("PRED"), or been found in pieces and thus spawning status is unknown. ("UNK"). She was 63 cm long and 35 cm around at her widest point. The distance between the back of her eye and where her tail flexes ("POH") was 50 cm. She had her adipose fin, which indicates she did not spend much time in a hatchery (hatchery origin fish are released in Miller and Walker Creeks but they are very small fish) or was a "natural origin" or "wild" fish.  Fish are counted only if a tail is found.

CSI volunteers Christine (left) and Kerry walk Miller Creek at the Sewer District plant on October 12, 2010.  Orange vests are worn for safety and ease of recognition.  "CSI" baseball caps are worn for fun (not provided through the program).

CSI volunteer Joy (front) and husband Roger behind look carefully for living fish and carcasses on Miller Creek on October 13, 2010.  One of the benefits of volunteering is getting to explore little-known, beautiful reaches of the creeks.

Photo of person holding open a cut open salmon to reveal eggs
This female coho carcass was measured and then cut open to determine whether she had spawned.  The red structures inside the body cavity are full egg sacks, indicating this female did not spawn before dying.  CSI volunteer Joy conducted this first necropsy of the 2010 survey season on October 12, 2010 on Miller Creek at the Normandy Park Community Club.

Photo of dead salmon lying on the edge of gravel stream bank
After measuring and checking the fish for signs of spawning, the CSI volunteers "flag" the fish with survey tape by cutting a hole in the back of the fish.  The survey tape lists the date the fish was found and helps avoid double-counting.  The volunteers then drive a wooden stake through the fish to pin the carcass to the stream bank.  This step helps keep the carcass in the water a little longer to make it available for predation by insects and juvenile fish.

Photo of great blue heron with small fish in its beak
The CSI teams have been seeing a lot of wildlife -- including wildlife that depend on salmon and other fish in the stream.  During the October 12, 2010 survey, the team caught this great blue heron in the act of fishing a pool on Miller Creek.  Note the small fish wiggling in the beak of the fish -- a moment after this photo was taken, the heron swallowed the fish.

Photo of fish eggs laying on gravel
The CSI teams have found that almon carcasses are quickly (less than 24 hours) located by predators and ripped open, leaving eggs on the streambank if the fish was not able to spawn.  CSI volunteers Annette and Stefanie photographed these fresh eggs on a gravel bar along Miller Creek on October 30, 2010.

Photo of dead salmon lying on sandy streambank
High flows on November 1, when it rained over 1.5 inches, left behind carcasses of a size not previously seen this fall.  This is one of two smaller fish found by CSI volunteers Kerry and Christine on November 2.  It is thought to be a "jack" coho, an immature coho salmon that returned from the ocean one year before other fish in its age cohort.  It is about 25-30 cm (10-12 inches) in length.  Photo courtesy of Christine Terry.

Photo of dead salmon lying on sandy streambank
This is the second fish found on November 2, also likely a coho "jack."  (See caption for photo above.)

Photo of two salmon swimming next to each other in shallow stream
This photo shows the first chum observed during the 2010 season. There are a male and female and the female is building a redd (egg nest).  Photo taken at Lower Miller Creek survey reach on November 7, 2010.

Photo of man and boy kneeling on stream bank next to salmon carcass
The photo above shows CSI volunteers David (l) and son Ethan conducting a necropsy on a female coho salmon on November 7, 2010 on Miller Creek.

Photo of salmon carcass being held open by two people to show a few salmon eggs
This photo of the November 7, 2010 necropsy shows that only about 25% of the eggs remain.  This indicates that this female coho was able to spawn before she died.

Photo of river otter poking his head above the water
The photo above shows a river otter with its head just above the surface, looking straight at the camera.  White stuff is foam.  November 7, 2010 photo on Miller Creek.

Photo of two women standing in stream holding a large salmon carcass
The next best thing to seeing a live fish when surveying is finding a fresh carcass to conduct a necropsy on.  CSI volunteers Christine (l) and Kerry prepare to conduct a necropsy on the first dead chum salmon found during the 2010 survey season.  The team startled three river otters that apparently were eating this carcass on Miller Creek on November 9, 2010.

Photo of salmon swimming in stream next to man standing in boots
The photo above shows a 60 cm (24 inch) chum salmon swimming in Walker Creek next to basin steward Dennis Clark on November 10, 2010.  Salmon are usually quick to flee when mammals -- potential predators -- are in the stream.  This chum, however, held station for several minutes, brushing up against Dennis' boot, before suddenly spurting upstream to cover under bushes.  Photo courtesy of Joy Neubauer.

Photo of woman walking in stream with bright sunlight streaming through vegetation overhead
Even when the fish are few, the stream is always there for the CSI volunteers to enjoy.  On some days, such as November 10, 2010, with the sun streaming through the fading leaves of autumn, the streams are magical.

Photo of man and woman standing in stream in snowy forest
CSI teams don't let a little snow deter them from "making their rounds."  Volunteers Ed (l) and Merry Ann surveyed the streams on November 22, 2010.  Photo courtesy of Merry Ann Peterson.

Photograph of red spots on snow
The snow revealed signs of struggles previously unknown.  This packed-down snow is red with what appears to be blood -- perhaps the site where a predator consumed a freshly-caught salmon?  November 25, 2010 photo courtesy of Jon Jones.

Photo of salmon swimming in a shallow stream
Another nice photo from the CSI teams of their quarry.  This chum was photographed on December 7, 2010.  Photo courtesy of Christine Terry.

Photo of water flooding a field next to a wooden boardwalk
Although the CSI teams go out to the creeks every day, they cannot survey every day.  During the December 11-12 "pineapple express" storms, the streams became engorged with stormwater runoff.  This December 12 photo was taken by CSI volunteer David at the Normandy Park Community Club and shows floodwaters from Miller and Walker Creeks nearly covering the playfields.  Under these conditions, it is neither safe nor practical to look for salmon. Photo courtesy of David Bobanick.

Photo of flooding creek
This view of Miller Creek at the Cove on December 12, 2010 looks upstream.  The water level is well above and beyond the stream banks.  About 3.5 inches of rain fell in the area from mid-day on December 11 to late on December 12, 2010.  Photo courtesy of David Bobanick.
