KCRTS Read Me

This download file contains the Windows updated version 6.0 of the King County Runoff Time Series (KCRTS) program.

View Bug Report for information on changes made since KCRTS version 5.0. If you are not currently running version 5.0 or later, you need to purchase the KCRTS CD-ROM and software reference manual. An upgrade package for previous KCRTS manuals is available for $25-, plus tax/shipping as applicable. Call (206) 296-6519 to purchase the upgrade packet.

To install upgrade,

  1. Download the self-extracting ZIP file by clicking the WKCRTS.EXE file, and then click the RUN tab to verify, again click on the RUN tab for security purposes and finally the unzip tab to download to the default C:\kc_swdm folder.
  2. Verify program replaces existing files in the C:\kc_swdm file folder.
  3. Run KCRTS by double clicking on the WKCRTS.EXE file or click the provided short cut file and verify the version number is 6.0.
  4. Some operating systems are set to not allow KCRTS to read datafiles if they have Archive or Read-Only attributes. If this sounds familiar or if you get a message that KCRTS cannot open KCRTS.DAT, then after running the upgrade patch, run the batchfile c:\kc_swdm\fix_read.bat (which is included in the wkcrts.zip file) to reset all KCRTS program file attributes.
  5. If still experiencing the error message "Cannot open KCRTS.DAT" try the following fix: Right-mouse click on the KC_SWDM file folder and open Properties. Click on the Security tag and verify that as the User you have full rights to the folder which include Full Control, Modify, Read & Excute, etc. You may have to get your LAN administator to make this change.

KCRTS Bug Report 08/29/07

The following reported bugs have been addressed in update version 6.00 of the King County Runoff Time Series (WKCRTS) program.

15) Version 6.00. This version lowers the minimum orifice diameter to 0.1 inches from the previous 0.5 inches, other fixes involve eliminating old or redundant menu options.

14) Version 5.00. Fixed some of the errors introduced in fixing 4.42d including Add Time Series, Compare Flow Durations, and significant digit related problems.

13) Version 4.42d. Fixed the Windows version of the KCRTS program so it will run with Windows XP Service Pack 2. Additional user friendly additions were added.

12) Version 4.42b. Corrected two bugs introduced in Version 4.42 related to infiltration tank trench width, and pausing during defining of v-notch weir.

11) Version 4.42a. Increased the allowable working directory path length from 80 characters to 120 characters.

10) Version 4.42. Following changes made: Added Arch-Pipe tanks as Facility option. F2 help screens updated/appended to include Arch Tanks. Note: All previous facility files will still work. Updated Tank routines to allow riser head to be set greater than effective storage depth with dead storage in tank. Added check in Compare Durations to make sure timeseries being compared have same timestep and number of years. Change made to Add Timeseries to avoid disaggregation of hourly timesteps to 15-minutes, unless one or more timeseries being summed is 15-minutes. Modified Compare Durations so that "New" timeseries is set to facility outflow. "Base" timeseries defaults to blank. The optional O! output file will default to *.DOC filename extension. wKCRTS date entry problem corrected. Record Executable Data File operations improved (Extract Hydrograph. Size a Facility, and canceled operations). Added a batchfile "Fix_Read.bat" which will remove file attributes from all KCRTS program files. This has become a problem on some operating systems which do not allow KCRTS to access datafiles if set as Archive or Read-Only.

9) Version 4.41c. Corrected problem with gravel trench facilities where having the full infiltration rate at zero stage created erroneous results. KCRTS now sets permeable area to zero at zero stage and interpolates between zero and maximum infiltration at the first non-zero stage.

8) Version 4.41b. Increased variable limits for vault facilities.

7) Version 4.41. Corrected problem with Tank Facilities when riser head not equal to storage depth. Program no longer crashes and facility routing tables generated correctly. In all facilities, if riser head is less than effective storage depth, the routing table will include dead storage with zero discharge. This volume will fill up at start of series and will remain full throughout simulation (except with reduced runoff files where reservoirs are reset each year). KCRTS one-outlet reservoir variable ranges have been increased. KCRTS Pond-Facilities in manual sizing mode now displays value in bottom area. Helpline note revised to indicate that if user wants a fixed width/length, the area needs to be ***** out.

6) Version 4.40k. Improved accuracy of timeseries volume. Problem created by 5 significant digit limit in stored timeseries. For example, if water year peak flow is 3,000 cfs the smallest flow would be 0.1 cfs (if peak 300 cfs, smallest flow 0.01 cfs, etc.). Flows less than smallest flow had been set to zero. KCRTS will now check to see if a loss of accuracy is occurring due to significant volume at flows less than the smallest flow. If so, KCRTS will sum flows less than the smallest flows until the smallest flow is reached and will add a flow equal to the smallest flow at that timestep. This will help maintain a more accurate mass balance in water years with high peak flow, but with significant volume occuring at flows 5 decimal places smaller. Problem identified in E. Washington project where a thunderstorm created a mass balance discrepancy. Above change initiated in KCRTS version 4.40k.

5) The Windows version of KCRTS (wKCRTS.EXE) would not execute within a Windows NT operating system. Problem originated in Microsoft provided libraries provided to support windows interfaces for FORTRAN programs. Programmer was able to recode the Microsoft libraries to eliminate the conflict on NT-OS. wKCRTS should now run on NT and Windows 2000 operating systems. (note: wKCBW still has unresolved conflicts).

4) Updated help screens to display our new mailing address on Program Information screen. Effective in version 4.40j.

3) When running an executable data file (EXC file) to perform a duration analysis for stage values, or with partial year durations, the program was not reading in EXC variables correctly. This problem would not occur if performing standard "flow" duration analyses. Problem fixed in version 4.40j.

2) The documentation file for R/D facilities: For a POND (infilt. or det.) when the user specifies a riser head greater than effective storage depth, the output file would display the water surface area (function of stage) incorrectly. This problem was corrected in version 4.40i.

1) In recent versions, Detention/Infiltration Tank routine does not account for live storage until live storage exceeds the dead storage. The becomes a problem when extra dead storage is added to these tanks. Problem apparent when reviewing facility documentation file, where at low heads live storage equals zero. FIX: bug fixed, version 4.40h. Tank routines now accounts for live storage at all head elevations. Note: When dead storage is added to tank, the stage=0.0 elevation corresponds to the interface between live/dead storage (not the tank invert).
