Green River Bank Stabilization & Habitat Restoration Project

Over 4000 linear feet of the Boeing Levee was set back from its previous top-of-bank location along the Right Bank of the Green River between River Mile 17.1 and 18.0. Work was completed in 2000, following dedication of a 200-foot-wide strip of land along the River from the Boeing Company to the City of Kent. Working with the Kent Parks and Engineering Departments and with the Boeing Company, King County arranged for vacation of the former Russell Road ROW and the removal of the paved road and associated roadbed fill materials. These materials were recycled and used to relocate a raised flood containment levee and paved trail segment along the landward margins of the 200-foot-wide parcel adjoining the river. This relocation project is the first step in a much more comprehensive proposal to restore riparian floodplain habitat and aquatic habitat complexity throughout the reach. It is anticipated the finished project will increase floodplain conveyance and flood storage capacity throughout the reach. Project completion will also decrease flood velocities, restore native riparian vegetative communities, provide for flood refuge over a wide lurbsrange of flows, and incorporate a variety of treatments along the OHWM, including LWD placement and the creation of shallow marginal habitat areas for juvenile salmonids.
