Best Management Practices
Besides mapping, another important initial component of the Agricultural Drainage Assistance Program was to work with stakeholders and develop Best Management Practices (BMPs). In 1998, 25 BMPs were developed and adopted as Public Rule. These 25 BMPs fall into 6 categories:
- Project Timing, wherein projects must be conducted during a "Fish Window" between July 15 and September 15
- Fish Protection Measures, including the temporary removal of fish from the project area
- Excavation of the watercourse
- Erosion Control
- Habitat
- Water Quality
These BMPs were revisited in the year 2001 after a review of the initial pilot phase, and the revisions were adopted as Public Rule 21A-24.
