The Duwamish Waterway... running towards a brighter future

Cleaning up the Lower Duwamish

Back to the cleaning up the Duwamish

Restoring the waterway

King County and its LDWG partners have proposed (in an Oct. 2010 Feasibility Study) 11 cleanup alternatives or scenarios that use a mix of technologies over different sized areas to reduce the risks to human health and wildlife in the Lower Duwamish.

Among the 11 cleanup alternatives are five that use more containment/capping to reduce risks, and five that use removal, or dredging, and one that serves as a foundation for all 10 of the other cleanup alternatives. All 11 cleanup alternatives reduce the risks to the level achievable with current technology with different tradeoffs and timelines.

Review the graphic below to learn more about each alternative.

  • Containment/capping alternatives have less construction impacts and use more containment and natural recovery.
  • Removal alternatives have more construction impacts and use more dredging.

Cleanup approaches

King County believes a successful plan will achieve the health risk reductions possible while retaining economic vitality, using public funds wisely and protecting the quality of life for those directly affected by cleanup activities.
