Executive Constantine recognized winners at County’s annual Earth Day Expo, April 22 at Westlake Plaza in Seattle

King County presented its highest environmental honor – the Green Globe Awards – to individuals, school districts, cities and businesses that are the Puget Sound region’s brightest environmental stars.

The awards were presented as part of King County’s eighth-annual Earth Day Expo celebration, April 22 at Westlake Plaza in downtown Seattle. Among the winners this year was Kathy Fletcher, retiring Executive Director of People for Puget Sound, who received the Environmental Catalyst Award from King County Executive Dow Constantine.“Award winners are leaders, innovators and are truly dedicated to making King County and the greater Puget Sound region such a tremendous place to live, work and play,” Executive Constantine said. “I want to thank all of our winners for proving that commitment and dedication makes a positive difference in the community.”The King County Earth Day Expo also featured informational booths and displays, King County EcoConsumer Tom Watson, plus the County’s environmental mascot Bert the Salmon.

Nominees are selected by King County program managers. These are the general criteria for Green Globe Award winners:

  • The nominee has shown leadership in activities that foster environmental stewardship in the community by protecting the environment, managing natural resources and encouraging community involvement.
  • Leadership can be rated on the basis of long-term commitments to environmental stewardship or by a single innovation that signifies a major advance in environmental stewardship.
  • The nominee needs to have accomplished these goals by working in partnership with King County programs.
