May 18 open house to discuss Marymoor Park tree inventory, planting, replacement plan

The Friends of Marymoor Park is hosting an open house May 18 to share with the public the final draft of a tree inventory and tree planting and replacement plan that was recently developed as a long-term tree and forest preservation, enhancement and maintenance program for the King County park.

The open house is set for 7 p.m. at the Clise Mansion in Marymoor Park. 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy NE, Redmond.

The plan was prepared by EarthCorps in cooperation with King County Parks Division and was funded by a Washington State Department of Natural Resources’ Community Forestry Assistance grant.

At the heart of the plan is an extensive tree inventory of the 640-acre park. Conducted in September and October 2010, the inventory catalogues the park’s 3,903 trees in historical, passive and active areas of the park.

The survey recorded the structural composition including species, diameters and heights of existing mature trees; the species, diameters and heights of existing regenerating trees; and the densities and distributions of both native and non-native trees.

Having a master plan for tree management in the park will help King County develop a park-wide strategy for planning advance replacement of trees as the mature trees die off, and to deal with invasive, non-native species.
