King County’s ‘Recycle More Spring Cleaning Week’ helps residents clear out the clutter

Tips for easy spring cleaning that can help improve recycling, cut waste

It’s spring again and the annual urge to clean out, clear out and de-clutter has returned. King County’s Recycle More Spring Cleaning Week, May 9-13, has also arrived to show residents how to recycle or dispose of all the items they no longer want or need, and to offer tips on how to reduce clutter in the first place, through better recycling and waste prevention practices.

“Spring cleaning can be overwhelming when you aren’t sure what to do with all that stuff,” said Gerty Coville, King County Solid Waste Division program manager. “King County’s Spring Cleaning Week is here to help you figure out what goes in the recycling cart, yard waste cart and garbage cart, and what should be donated, recycled or disposed of, or taken to a private recycler.”

Spring cleaning tips range from how to “de-funk your fridge and pantry” by donating edible food and recycling food scraps and food-soiled paper, to how to organize the recycling system in the home office and recycle, donate or dispose of accumulated items in the office, spare bedroom and garage.

Spring Cleaning Week gives residents ideas about ways to set up more effective recycling systems at home and prevent waste in the first place. King County’s latest research shows that although the majority of residents say they recycle, more than half of what ends up in the County’s Cedar Hills Regional Landfill each year could have been recycled.

“We can all do more to reduce the amount of waste headed to our landfill,” Coville said. “Spring Cleaning Week is a terrific opportunity for residents to do their annual cleaning, recycle more and reduce their waste year-round. Doing that will make spring cleaning even easier next year.”
