Proposal would protect homes, roads along active river stretch

Flood Control District Logo King County logoLearn more about a King County proposal to increase protection of homes, roads and other public infrastructure along a portion of the Cedar River east of Renton at a Feb. 2 meeting.

Set for 6-7:30 p.m. at the Renton Community Center, 1715 S.E. Maple Valley Hwy., the meeting will feature an open house, presentations and a question-and-answer session on the proposed repairs to the Cedar Rapids levee setback project. Written comments on the plans for repair will be taken through Feb. 17.

Cedar Rapids, roughly six miles east of Renton on the Cedar River, is the site of a levee-protection and habitat improvement project that was completed late in 2008, but was severely damaged by near-record high flows that occurred in January 2009.

Engineers are proposing to repair damage caused by last year’s flooding, in order to continue to provide flood protections for nearby homes and roads.

Information about this and other proposed public-safety projects along rivers is available on the King County Flood Control District Web site, http://www.kingcountyfloodcontrol.org. Online driving directions to the Renton Community Center can be found at http://rentonwa.gov/living/default.aspx?id=55.

For more information about the project, meeting or where to send comments, please contact Nancy Faegenburg at 206-296-8372 or nancy.faegenburg@kingcounty.gov.
