Learn what to do before, during and after a flood

King County offers floodplain residents tips on protecting family, property

King County logo Flood Control District LogoA new booklet now available from King County is filled with information on how to protect yourself, your family and your property in flood and other emergency events.

“Before, During and After a Flood” a 35-page, comprehensive flood response information pamphlet, has been mailed to more than 40,000 floodplain residents in King County. Copies are also available to community groups and organizations.

To get a free copy, or request a supply for your organization, contact the King County Water and Land Resources Division’s River and Floodplain Management Unit at 206-296-8001. Funding for the pamphlet was provided by the King County Flood Control District.

The flood response pamphlet, a flood warning brochure – mailed to residents earlier in the season – and the new automated flood alert system are among the many resources King County is providing to residents to improve public safety and help citizens prepare for and recover from potential flooding.

The pamphlet focuses on flood issues but the information is also applicable in other emergencies, such as earthquakes or power outages.

Flooding in King County most commonly occurs from November through February. So far this season, there has been minor flooding along the Tolt and Snoqualmie rivers. However, historically King County rivers have risen to flood height in every month of the year.

While the region is experiencing a mild winter this year, officials are encouraging residents to use this time to prepare for emergencies. Permanent repairs under way by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the federally owned and operated Howard Hanson Dam in the upper Green River Valley will likely take several years to complete and the heightened flood risk for Green River Valley residents is expected to remain until repairs have been completed.

More information about King County flood preparedness is available at www.kingcounty.gov/safety/FloodPlan.aspx.
