‘Tis the season to buy local: Puget Sound Fresh farmers offer holiday trees, greens

Buying locally grown Christmas trees from participating Puget Sound Fresh farmers this season not only ensures finding the best and freshest trees available, but gives you something more in return: Sustainable support for King County farmers.

A complete list of Puget Sound Fresh Christmas tree farmers is available at www.pugetsoundfresh.org; scroll down and click on the Christmas tree photo.

Purchasing Christmas trees and greens from local farms helps ensure agriculture remains a part of King County’s economy and landscape into the future. You’ll also be doing your part for the environment, as locally grown trees require less fuel to transport from farm to market, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Finally, you’ll contribute to the economic health of our community, as buying local keeps more dollars circulating in our economy.

This season, you can choose and cut your special Christmas tree or select from fresh pre-cut trees at six King County farms, where you’ll also find wreaths, garlands, holly, mistletoe and other greenery to give your home a “farm fresh” festive décor.

Each farm offers something to make your holiday shopping extra special, whether it’s complimentary beverages such as hot cider or cocoa, or pony rides, baked goods, unique gift shops or even a visit with an all-important guest from the North Pole.

Plus, there’s always the fun that comes with being in the great outdoors, and enjoying the scenic splendor of our King County farms, as well as the distinctive beauty of our locally grown trees.

Puget Sound Fresh was launched in 1998 by King County to help consumers identify products that are grown, raised or harvested in each of the 12 counties that touch Puget Sound.  In 2001, it became a program of Cascade Harvest Coalition, a Washington based non–profit supporting sustainable food systems and now operates in partnership with King County and King Conservation District.

Additionally, Cascade Harvest Coalition publishes the annual Puget Sound Farm Guide, the region’s premier consumer publication for finding local farms, farmers markets, CSAs, U-Picks, seasonal activities and businesses that offer local food.
