Sept. 30, 2009 King County’s giant ‘cube of food’ swims upstream for Issaquah Salmon Days
King County’s “cube of food” will make an appearance this weekend at Salmon Days in downtown Issaquah. The cube is part of King County’s “Recycle Food. It’s Easy to Do” campaign about food scraps recycling at home.
The clear acrylic cube measures 3 foot by 3 foot by 4 foot, and is filled with the amount of food scraps and food-soiled paper generated by an average King County single-family household in a year – approximately 477 pounds.
King County Master Recycler Composters will be on site with the cube to answer questions, educate the public and hand out compostable bag samples that can be used for kitchen collection of compostable food and paper.
Food scraps and food soiled paper recycling will take center stage at this year’s Salmon Days. In addition to the Cube of Food, the festival food vendors will use fully compostable service ware. The plates, cups and straws are made from cornstarch and recycling collection stations will be set up throughout the event area.
The cube made two other appearances this summer – at the KUBE Summer Jam in Auburn and at Railroad Days in Snoqualmie. For more information about food scrap recycling visit www.recyclefood.com.
