Oct. 21, 2009 Employees respond to overflow near Interurban Pump Station
Sewer utility employees responded quickly to a sewage overflow discovered about 2:30 p.m. near the Interurban Pump Station in Tukwila. It’s estimated that about 5,000 gallons of wastewater spilled from a pipe into the Duwamish River near South 143rd Street.
The overflow is apparently related to a vacuum release check valve replacement project began last summer. Crews made repairs, completed installation of a new valve and corrected the issue.
County staff took water quality samples and notified health and regulatory agencies about the overflow. The system is again operating normally, and crews will continue to monitor the site over the next several days.
