Celebrate sanitation on ‘World Toilet Day’

County offers free treatment plant tours, Nov. 19

Potty humor might get laughs, but inadequate sanitation is a serious matter to the 2.5 billion people who lack access to proper toilets and safe sewage treatment.

In honor of World Toilet Day on Nov. 19, King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division will offer free public tours to provide people an opportunity to learn about the treatment process and its crucial role in protecting public health, the environment, and our quality of life.

  • Thursday, Nov. 19 - West Point Treatment Plant, 1400 Utah St. W., Seattle, 2 to 4 p.m.  Pre-registration is required by noon on Nov. 18. Contact Casey Plank at 206-263-6028, 711 TTY, or e-mail casey.plank@kingcounty.gov. Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities can be arranged by calling in advance.

The plants are industrial facilities, so sensible closed-toed shoes are required. Tours last about two hours, and children accompanied by an adult are welcome.

World Toilet Day was established in 2001 by the non-profit World Toilet Organization to increase awareness about sanitation and its importance to human health and economic development.
