July 27, 2009 Utility crew stops small overflow on Vashon Island
Sewer utility employees quickly stopped a small overflow that was detected early Sunday morning at the Beulah Park Cove Treatment Facility, which is part of the Vashon Treatment Plant system.
An estimated 500 gallons of partially-treated wastewater overflowed from a tank onto the grounds, possibly reaching a storm drain that flows into the cove. By 9:30 a.m., workers had stopped the overflow and the facility again resumed normal operation.
The county notified health and regulatory agencies about the overflow and took water quality samples.
Employees believe that a control panel malfunction caused the overflow. Workers will repair or replace equipment as needed and continue to monitor the facility.
