July 17, 2009 Easy, convenient hazardous waste disposal comes to south King County
Starting today, residents and small businesses in communities throughout south King County won’t have to wait long – or travel far – to safely dispose of their hazardous waste.
That’s because the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County has begun twice-a-month service of its popular Wastemobile hazardous waste program at the Auburn SuperMall. The service, which is free and available to all King County residents, is being offered on the first and third full weekends of the month.
“South King County’s population continues to grow, and we want to make household hazardous waste disposal safe and convenient for these thriving communities,” said Jay Watson, Local Hazardous Waste Management Program Administrator.
In addition to this new South King County service, the Wastemobile will continue its travels throughout King County in the summer and fall, including upcoming stops in Covington, Snoqualmie and Bothell/Kenmore. The 2009 schedule is posted on-line at www.lhwmp.org/home/HHW/disposal-locations.aspx#auburn.
Created in 1989, the Wastemobile was the first program of its kind in the nation. The Wastemobile is operated by the King County Solid Waste Division (SWD) as part of the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program. The new Auburn SuperMall service will be available to King County residents year-round.
“Providing King County residents with safe and convenient methods of household hazardous material disposal helps keep these items out of the trash, and out of the environment,” said Julie Mitchell with the King County Solid Waste Division.
The Wastemobile also provides free products, such as oil-based paint, stain and primer, plus wood care and cleaning products. These products are subject to availability, and residents will need sign a release form prior to receiving materials.
Residents contribute to the cost of this service through their regular trash and sewer utility fees, so there is no fee charged at the Wastemobile.
Small businesses can also use this service. To find out if your businesses qualifies call the Business Waste Line at 206-263-8899 or visit www.lhwmp.org/home/BHW/index.aspx.
