Community invited to Vashon Island treatment plant open house, May 9

Community members are invited to an open house at the Vashon Treatment Plant to learn about the wastewater treatment process and how it works to keep our environment clean and healthy.

Saturday, May 9
10 a.m. to noon
9615 SW 171st Street, Vashon

Tour the plant, enjoy refreshments, and learn what you can do at home to protect Puget Sound.  Employees will share water quality tips, including recipes for homemade “green” cleaning products, and provide information about how to safely dispose of things like unwanted medications that shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet.

People planning to take the tour should wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.

There will also be information about the benefits of the new facilities, which came online in late 2006. In addition to a more modern, reliable treatment plant, the new outfall is located 2,800 feet offshore, where Puget Sound currents quickly dilute the treated wastewater. The new facilities have significantly improved water quality, prompting the Washington State Department of Health to reclassify commercial geoduck beds in the area from "prohibited" to "approved”.

People enjoy clean water and a healthy environment because of King County's wastewater treatment program. The county's Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and water quality by serving 17 cities, 17 local sewer districts and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. Formerly called Metro, the regional clean-water agency now operated by King County has been preventing water pollution for more than 40 years.
