April 9, 2009 Tired of junk mail? Do something about it this Earth Day, while supporting King County Parks
Each year, the average American household receives 41 pounds of junk mail, and homeowners spend an average of 70 hours annually dealing with that unwanted avalanche of flyers, catalogs and credit card offers.
What’s more, junk mail annually produces more greenhouse gas emissions than nine million cars, wastes 28 billion gallons of water and destroys more than 100 million trees.
Rid your home and office of junk mail with help from 41pounds.org, a service that in one quick step will help reduce your clutter at home, help the planet and support King County Parks.
41pounds.org stops postal junk mail and unwanted catalogs, reducing the number of trees that need to be harvested so that the forests can keep doing what they do best – providing oxygen and absorbing carbon to cool the planet.
Signing up with 41pounds.org costs $41 and stops all unwanted junk mail from invading your family’s mailbox for five years. With each new subscription to the service, 41pounds.org will donate $15 to King County Parks.
“King County Parks helps people lead happy, healthy lives by providing trails, playgrounds, athletic fields, a world-class aquatic center and many other terrific amenities,” said Parks Director Kevin Brown.
“41pounds.org is not only helping make the world a better place by reducing waste from junk mail, they’re also helping us improve our parks, preserve open space, provide new attractions and ensure ongoing support for our facilities,” Brown said, adding that all gifts to Parks via the Northwest Parks Foundation are used only for parks purposes.
"We’re proud to partner with King County Parks to raise awareness about the impact of junk mail on the environment, and to raise money for parks,” said 41pounds.org co-founder Sander DeVries. “Junk mail contributes to global warming and wastes more than 100 million trees each year. Trees are a signature part of the Pacific Northwest landscape. Let's keep them there."
