Oct. 7, 2008 Workshop for floodplain farmers set for Oct. 28 King County workshop covers flood preparedness, farm pads, other topics Farmers who work the rich bottomlands along King County rivers can learn more about flood preparedness, flood recovery and beneficial changes to building rules to help them better protect their livestock and livelihoods, at an Oct. 28 workshop. Sponsored by the King County Agriculture Commission and the King County Department of Development and Environmental Services’ Agriculture Permit Team, the workshop will be at Sno-Valley Senior Center, 4610 Stephens Ave., Carnation, from 7-9 p.m. An hour-long open house starts at 6 p.m., and will provide participants with detailed information about flood mapping on specific properties and other issues. Participants can also stay after the meeting to look at flood maps and ask questions. The workshop will cover flood preparedness, flood recovery, and county regulations, including what is allowed during a flood emergency, and how to meet permit requirements afterward. Workshop co-sponsors include the Snoqualmie Forum and the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks’ River and Floodplain Management Unit and Agriculture Program. Workshop participants can also learn about new floodplain regulations for agricultural structures, floodway and floodplain mapping, flood warning systems, floodplain management and flood-related health and food safety issues.
