Independence Day fireworks concern leads to brief closure of Steve Cox Memorial Park

King County’s Steve Cox Memorial Park, which recently underwent a major renovation that provided significant improvements to the baseball field and grandstand, will close overnight on July 4 to protect this community treasure from potential damage by illegal fireworks.

The park will close beginning at 8 p.m. July 4 and will reopen at dawn on July 5. Park staff and King County Sheriff’s deputies will be stationed at the park to enforce the park closure.

Formerly White Center Park, the park was rededicated this past April as Steve Cox Memorial Park in honor of Deputy Cox, who was killed in the line of duty in December 2006. Deputy Cox was an active member of the community, often using organized athletics as a way of steering at-risk youth toward brighter futures.

The White Center Community Development Association, the Seattle Prep baseball program, Puget Sound Senior Baseball League, and King County Parks partnered with local businesses, baseball leagues and community members to renovate and improve the stadium.

The use of fireworks is not allowed in any King County park facility.
