Community members are invited to an open house at the Vashon Treatment Plant to learn about the wastewater treatment process and why it works to keep our environment clean and healthy.

The event will feature treatment plant tours, refreshments, and information about “green” cleaning and personal care along with free product samples. People planning to take the tour should wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes.
There will also be information about the benefits of the new facilities, which came online in late 2006. In addition to a more modern, reliable treatment plant, the new outfall is located 2,800 feet offshore, where Puget Sound currents quickly dilute the treated wastewater. The new facilities have significantly improved water quality, prompting the Washington State Department of Health to reclassify commercial shellfish growing beds in the area from "prohibited" to "approved”.

The county’s Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and water quality by serving 17 cities, 17 local sewer utilities and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. Formerly called Metro, the regional clean-water agency now operated by King County has been preventing water pollution for more than 40 years.
