Fire caused by lightning strike closes Bow Lake Transfer Station in Tukwila

Lightning struck the Bow Lake Transfer Station in Tukwila late Wednesday afternoon, causing an electrical fire underneath the scales and closing the 24-hour solid waste disposal facility. There were no injuries.

The facility, located at 18800 Orillia Rd. S., is closed indefinitely as crews investigate, assess the damages and make repairs. The lightning strike occurred at about 4:15 p.m.

Daytime users of the Bow Lake facility are asked to take their garbage to one of the two nearest transfer stations – the Renton Transfer Station, located at 3021 NE Fourth St., in Renton, or the Algona Transfer Station, located at 35315 W. Valley Hwy., in Algona. For those who need to drop off garbage in the evening, the Factoria Transfer Station, located at 13800 SE 32nd St. in Bellevue, is open until 11:30 p.m.
