Visit King County Parks for summertime concerts, movies, art and more

Marymoor concertThere’s plenty so see, do and hear between now and Labor Day at King County Parks – Your Big Backyard, including great live music, popular movies, art shows, a dog show and much more.

Here are some of the highlights:

Marymoor Park

Aug. 15 – 9 p.m.
FirstTech Movies @ Marymoor Park presents "The Pursuit of Happyness" (PG-13)
Bring a blanket and check out this much-acclaimed film that stars Oscar-nominated Will Smith as a struggling salesman who takes custody of his son as he faces challenges in his professional career. Movies are held at McNair Field in Marymoor Park and all donations go directly into supporting parks maintenance.

Aug. 17 – noon to 6 p.m.; August 18-19, 10-6 p.m. - Parking is $1
Art at Marymoor Park
Created by the Northwest Crafts Alliance, Art at Marymoor Park features more than 150 emerging, established and accomplished artists in a wide variety of mediums, including glass, jewelry, clothing, photography, wood, mixed media, sculpture and more. Information is available at 206-525-5926.

Carbon Leaf
Rising up through the Richmond, Virginia club scene, Carbon Leaf has cranked out an impressive number of hits, including “The Boxer,” “Life Less Ordinary,” “What about Everything and “Learn to Fly.”

Aug. 21 - $38.50
Wilco
With six studio releases and a live double CD to their credit, Wilco has garnered widespread critical acclaim and solid commercial success with a musical style that has gone from alt-Country to experimental rock. The Chicago-based band is currently on tour to promote “Sky Blue Sky.”

FirstTech Movies @ Marymoor Park presents “Monster House” (PG)
Kids discover that the creepy house next door is actually a lot scarier than it looks in this animated gem from 2006. Featuring vocal talents such as Steve Buscemi, Fred Willard and John Heder, this movie is a great feature that's suitable for the whole family. Movies are held at McNair Field in Marymoor Park and all donations go directly into supporting parks maintenance.

Aug. 22-26
Sammamish Kennel Club All-Breed Show
Marymoor Park goes to the dogs – literally – for the Sammamish Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show. Featuring multiple dog breeds, agility shows and vendors booths, this all-breed show is free and open to the public.

Aug. 29 - $39.50
311 and Matisyahu

A journeyman band that mixes alternative rock with rap and funk, 311 has been cranking out edgy, radio station-friendly hits since 1995. The band’s loyal following is eagerly awaiting 311’s ninth studio album sometime next year. Born Matthew Paul Miller, Matisyahu stormed onto the alternative music scene in 2006 with his blend of traditional Jewish themes with reggae and rock sounds. He was named top reggae artist by Billboard Magazine and has performed with some of the genre’s top stars.

Group Health Velodrome at Marymoor Park

August 20, 22, 27 and 29
Monday and Wednesday Night Racing

The Monday and Wednesday Night Racing series develops bike racers for the Friday Night Racing series, presented by Group Health. The Monday series is designed for juniors and new bike racers, while the Wednesday series offers masters-only races. Spectator admission is free. Racing starts at 7 p.m. on Mondays, and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information, visit www.velodrome.org/.

Group Health Friday Night Track Racing

The Group Health Friday Night Track Racing series, "The Show," is thrilling action for racers and spectators alike. World-class cyclists compete under the lights, while family and friends picnic on the lawn or enjoy the view from the stands. The traditional "Kiddie Kilo" happens the first and third Fridays of each month. Spectator admission is $4 for adults and free for kids 16 and under. For more information, visit www.velodrome.org/.

King County Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center

Weekdays in August
Last chance for summertime swimming lessons this month. Fall lesson sessions begin in September. Call 206-296-4444 to register.

Aug. 20-24, 27-29
Become a lifeguard – it’s a great year-round job. American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard training classes are scheduled from 12:30-4:30 p.m. daily from Aug. 20-24 and from Aug. 27-29. Cost of the class is $105, and includes ARC lifeguard training and first aid, CPR and AED training, bloodborne pathogen training and more. Students must be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course and able to pass the prerequisite swim test. For more details, or to register, call 206-296-4444, or 253-927-5173.
