Detour set for King County’s Green River Trail during levee repairs in Kent

Much-needed repairs to a levee along the Green River in Kent mean that Green River Trail users will have to follow a short detour around the construction site for about two months.

Beginning tomorrow (Aug. 7), King County’s Green River Trail from the South 200th Street bridge to South 190th Street will be closed to allow for extensive repairs to the Briscoe School Levee, a flood-prevention structure on which the trail sits.

The detour will be clearly marked and will follow nearby surface streets, said Robert Foxworthy, King County Regional Trails Coordinator.

"We urge all trail users to exercise caution while following this detour route," he said.

Scheduled repairs include replacing roughly 400 feet of levee, including the trail surface. High winter flows in the Green River caused a portion of the levee to slump, creating a long crack in the trail's asphalt.

The 12-mile-long Green River Trail begins in Fort Dent in Tukwila and winds south through the Green River Valley. The trail is part of King County's nationally acclaimed 175-mile regional trail system that connects communities throughout the county and provides great opportunities for exercise and commuting.
