King County counts the tires, toes on the trails

2005 Archived News

Whether you stroll, jog, bike or blade, King County wants to know how often you use the regional trail system.

The county is partnering with the Bicycle Alliance of Washington to survey people who use the trails system. This year, the survey will focus on the Burke-Gilman and Sammamish River Trails between Seattle and King County's Marymoor Park near Redmond.

"The survey provides valuable information,"said Bill Moritz, Ph.D., professor emeritus from the University of Washington. "We find out how many people are using the trail and which activities are most popular. We then study that information and use it to plan new trails."

The county needs interested volunteers to help collect information at several survey stations along the trails. It's especially important this year because construction is expected to begin on the final link of the East Lake Sammamish Trail this summer.

"It's really a fun, worthwhile event and we would like to have community volunteers help us out,"said Moritz. "The survey has been conducted every five years since 1980.”

Survey stations will be set up in Seattle, Bothell, Woodinville, and Redmond.
