Looking for something to do this weekend? Restoration of the Cavanaugh pond continues and White Center spring clean up helps perk up playgrounds. Take a look at the rundown of King County Parks activities for this weekend and next.

Volunteer Events

May 14

Cavanaugh Pond – along the Cedar River in Renton 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Come help plant, weed, mulch, water or monitor the restoration project along the old gravel quarry along the Cedar River. The pond project is focused on restoring the stream and wetland buffer habitats for salmon and other wildlife. Volunteers will work to remove invasive species and establish native species and shrubs.

May 14

White Center Community Clean up at the White Center Development Association Office, 9615 16th Ave SW. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.


At “White Center Spring Clean Up,” you can help perk up playgrounds, remove invasive plants, and get ready for new plantings in the fall. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Work begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. afterwards volunteers will get together for lunch and live music. Work will take place at seven sites throughout White Center.

Tanner Landing – North Bend 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by American Whitewater and Mountains to Sound Greenway. Volunteers will help remove invasive plants.

Taylor Mountain Forest – Hobart 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This event is sponsored by King County and Mountain to Sound Greenway and volunteer activities include clearing ditches, brushing and lopping to remove plants or tree limbs that block trailways, and removing protruding roots and rocks along trails. There will be a BBQ at Lake Sammamish immediately following all Mountains to Sounds event.

May 21 & 28

King County Greenhouse – Maple Valley 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Join others potting native trees at the King County Greenhouse. The native trees will be used throughout King County Parks for habitat improvements and restoration projects. For all volunteer opportunities and events please contact Tina Miller, 206-296-2990 or tina.miller@kingcounty.gov.

Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center

May 20 to 22 - Pacific Coast Swimming Invitational

May 20 - 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
May 21 - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
May 22 - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This annual event is co-hosted by USA Swimming clubs, South Sound Titans (Sumner) and Washington Aquatic Killer Orcas (Tacoma). More than thirty teams will be attending from Washington and Oregon with athletes competing by age and gender. Competition will begin Friday evening and continue on Saturday and Sunday. Spectator admission is free and carpooling is recommended.

Cougar Mountain

May 21

Cougar Mountain Running Series 9 a.m.

The Cougar Mountain Running Series kicks off at the Red Town Site with a five-mile run. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. and continues until 8:30 a.m. Racing begins at 9 a.m. with awards and prizes scheduled for 11 a.m. Cost for one race is $25 and $80 for all four races. King County Fairgrounds

Spring Dairy Show 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The 67th annual Spring Dairy Show will feature more than 100 youth from Western Washington exhibiting up to 130 animals. The event is open to the public.
