King County accepting Youth Sports

2005 Archived News

King County Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce a new application cycle for Youth Sports Facility Grants (YSFG). The YSFG program provides matching grant funds up to $50,000 to community and youth organizations that partner with a public agency such as a school district or city parks department to develop or renovate sports facilities.

To qualify for a grant, applicants must meet a two-to-one matching requirement. The program has awarded more than $7 million in grants and contributed to nearly 200 new or renovated athletic facilities since 1993. The YSFG program is a model for capital planning and development through partnerships, a major component of the Parks Division's business plan.

Please talk to your local recreation provider if you are aware of public land that could be developed for recreational activities for youth, or existing recreation facilities that need to be renovated. In the past, grants have been awarded for athletic fields, skate parks, playgrounds, sport courts, and rowing facilities, among others. Grant requests range from $5,000 to $50,000.

The YSFG program is funded and sustained through a quarter of one percent of car rental taxes. Organizations must match the grant money. By ordinance, the program is funded from a dedicated revenue source (car rental taxes) that cannot be used for parks maintenance and operations.

King County Parks is accepting YSFG applications until June 24, 2005. To download an application, go to http://www.metrokc.gov/parks/ysports/ysports.htm. If you would like additional information please contact the program manager at 206-263-6267 or e-mail at butch.lovelace@kingcounty.gov.
