Celebrate the arrival of summer by attending some of these great events taking place at King County Parks this weekend and next:


Volunteer Events

June 4

  • King County Greenhouse – Maple Valley 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Join others potting native trees at the King County Greenhouse. The native trees will be used throughout King County Parks for habitat improvements and restoration projects. For all volunteer opportunities and events please contact Tina Miller, 206-296-2990 or tina.miller@kingcounty.gov.


Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center

June 4

  • Multi-Service Center of King County Crab Feed & Auction – 6 p.m. – 11 p.m.

    This 4th annual event will be held at the King County Aquatic Center Banquet Hall the evening of June 4th. Reservations are limited, please call 253-838-6810. Funds raised will support the programs and people of south King County: food bank, clothing bank, adult literacy, employment assistance, energy assistance and the Washington State Long Term Care Ombudsman program.

June 4

  • Special Olympics Washington Summer Games – 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

    400 Special Olympic athletes will be competing in the swimming events to be held at the King County Aquatic Center. This annual state championship also includes track and field, cycling, power lifting and soccer which are held at Fort Lewis in Pierce County. Spectator admission will be free. June 5

  • Special Olympic Washington Summer Games - 9 a.m.-noon

    400 Special Olympic athletes will be competing in the swimming events to be held at the King County Aquatic Center. This annual state championship also includes track and field, cycling, power lifting and soccer which are held at Fort Lewis in Pierce County. Spectator admission will be free. June 5

  • "Splash Capades" - An Aquatic Show – 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

    The recently selected national team of USA Synchronized Swimming will be returning to King County to give a special public performance at the Aquatic Center Saturday, June 4th, 6:30pm-8:00pm. Spectator admission of $5 will be sold at the doors at the event.

    The Aquatic Show will feature solo and team performances by the squad of eleven including Olympic athletes: Tammy McGregor, Andrea Nott and national champions: Janet Culp, Jennie Culp, Kate Hooven, Becky Kim, Kim McKinley, Barbara Nesbitt, Annebelle Orme and Kim Probst. The evening will also include four performances by local synchronized swimming teams and a diving exhibition by local springboard and platform divers. For more information call 206-296-4444

Cougar Mountain Running Series

June 11

  • Cougar Mountain Running Series (7.5 mile race) – Race begins at 9 a.m. at the Clay Pit Road trailhead off of 166th Way SE

    The third annual Cougar Mountain Running Series continues with a 7.5 mile race on Sunday, June 11. A relatively new "sport', trail running provides an all-over-body workout and offers the visual pleasures of forested, scenic parkland. The Cougar Mountain Series is one of only a few trail running events west of the Cascades. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. and continues until 8:30 a.m. Racing begins at 9 a.m. with awards and prizes scheduled for 11 a.m. Cost for one race is $25 and $80 for all four races. Mountains to Sound Greenway Days Festival

June 11-12

  • Greenway Day Hikes

    Time to lace up your hiking boots! Communities along the corridor will celebrate the 2nd annual Greenway Days, June 10-12, 2005. It's a 100-mile festival along I-90 from the Puget Sound in Seattle, across the scenic Cascade Mountains, and into the historic town of Thorp in Kittitas County.

  • Mountain to Sound Anniversary. Rattlesnake Ridge Traverse - 8:30 a.m.

  • Mountains to Sound Hike. Squak Mountain Traverse - 9 a.m.

    From Trailcenter to Eastridge Trail then over Summit to Issaquah Junction then West Access to SR 900. Car shuttle. 3C, 6-7 miles, 200ft gain. For more information please contact Scott Prueter at 425-369-6016.

  • Mountain to Sound Hike. Cougar Mountain Traverse - 9 a.m.

    From, SR900 via AApeak to Red Town 3c, 6-7 miles, 1500 ft, gain. For more information please contact Fred Zeitler at 425-882-3435

  • Mountain to Sound Hike. Tiger Mountain - 1p.m.

    Loop hike from Trailcenter to Tradition Lake Plateau with emphasis on history and hydrology. 2B, 5 miles, 600ft, gain. For more information please contact Dave Kappler at 425-392-3571.

King County manages 25,389 acres of parks, pools, open space, natural land and trails. This includes 68 baseball fields, 61 soccer fields, 7 pools, 88 picnic areas, 34 playgrounds, 27 tennis courts, 13 boat launch sites, more than 100 miles of trails, six fishing piers, four community gardens, a climbing rock, the area's best off leash dog park and the world class King County Aquatic Center.
