Aug. 23, 2005 Midway Park to reopen Saturday, Aug. 27 2005 Archived News The City of Des Moines will officially open its newly renovated Midway Park at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new playground. The event will include games for the kids and food and refreshments for local residents.
King County is pleased to be partnering with Des Moines in renovating the park, which serves more than 3,000 residents in the Pacific Highway neighborhood. Children will be able to swing, climb and play again in the park, which now boasts new lighting, updated play equipment, newly resurfaced sports court, a new picnic shelter and drinking fountains.
The upgrades were made possible by a $50,000 Youth Sports Facility Grant (YSFG) award from the King County Parks and Recreation Division, which paid for the new sports court. The park is at South 221st Street and 29th Avenue South, Des Moines.
“We are pleased to give the Youth Sports Facility Grant to a project that touches so many residents in the Pacific Highway area,” said King County Parks Director Kevin Brown.
To qualify for a King County grant, applicants must meet a two-to-one matching requirement. The program has awarded more than $7 million in grants and contributed to nearly 200 new or renovated athletic facilities since 1993. The YSFG program is a model for capital planning and development through partnerships, a major part of the Park Division's business plan.
