2005 Archived News

King County Executive Ron Sims will share his visionary plans to protect open space and resource lands, and present King County’s prestigious Green Globe Awards for environmental achievement as part of Earth Day Expo activities on Friday, April 22, at Westlake Park.

The Earth Day Expo begins at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the downtown Seattle park, located at 401 Pine St., and continues through 2 p.m.

At 10:30 a.m., Executive Sims, with Roger Hoesterey, Northwest regional director of the Trust for Public Land, will share the Greenprint for King County open space conservation vision. Using powerful computer modeling, the Greenprint is a newly developed forward-thinking strategy for identifying and protecting the county’s most important open space and resource lands. Sims last month pledged to preserve 100,000 acres of open space by 2010.

The Green Globe Award ceremony will begin at 11 a.m., when Sims will present with KIRO-TV’s Penny LeGate King County’s Green Globe Awards to 14 businesses and individuals for their outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship.

Winners include William Ruckelshaus, Eastside Fire & Rescue, Wendy Walsh of Woodinville, the Trust for Public Land, Dr. Sally Brown and Dr. Check Henry of the University of Washington, the late Joel Kuperberg of Vashon Island, FuelCell Energy, Inc., Alayne Blickle of Horses for Clean Water, Port Blakely Communities in Issaquah, the Evergreen School in Shoreline, AAA Washington, Honeywell International in Redmond, YK Products of Everett, and the RE Store in Seattle.

On hand at the Earth Day Expo will be Bert the Salmon, worm bins and educational booths showcasing environmentally friendly programs, services and products. The expo kicks off at 9:45 a.m. with a show by Mad Science, a local company that entertains children with interactive science- and environmentally-themed demonstrations.
