Sims to unveil Greenprint for King County, present Green Globe Awards at King County’s Earth Day Expo

King County Executive Ron Sims will share his visionary plans to
protect open space and resource lands, and present King County’s
prestigious Green Globe Awards for environmental achievement as
part of Earth Day Expo activities on Friday, April
22, at Westlake Park.
The Earth Day Expo begins at 9:45 a.m. Friday
at the downtown Seattle park, located at 401 Pine St., and continues
through 2 p.m.
At 10:30 a.m., Executive Sims, with Roger Hoesterey,
Northwest regional director of the Trust for Public Land, will share
the Greenprint for King County open space conservation
vision. Using powerful computer modeling, the Greenprint is a newly
developed forward-thinking strategy for identifying and protecting
the county’s most important open space and resource lands.
Sims last month pledged to preserve 100,000 acres of open space
by 2010.
The Green Globe Award ceremony will begin at 11
a.m., when Sims will present with KIRO-TV’s Penny
LeGate King County’s Green Globe Awards to 14 businesses and
individuals for their outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship.
Winners include William Ruckelshaus, Eastside Fire & Rescue,
Wendy Walsh of Woodinville, the Trust for Public Land, Dr. Sally
Brown and Dr. Check Henry of the University of Washington, the late
Joel Kuperberg of Vashon Island, FuelCell Energy, Inc., Alayne Blickle
of Horses for Clean Water, Port Blakely Communities in Issaquah,
the Evergreen School in Shoreline, AAA Washington, Honeywell International
in Redmond, YK Products of Everett, and the RE Store in Seattle.
On hand at the Earth Day Expo will be Bert the
Salmon, worm bins and educational booths showcasing environmentally
friendly programs, services and products. The expo kicks off at
9:45 a.m. with a show by Mad Science, a local company
that entertains children with interactive science- and environmentally-themed
demonstrations.
