Learn how to make every day Earth Day at King County's 2nd annual
Earth Day Expo on Friday, April 22, at Westlake Park, from 9:45
a.m. until 2 p.m.
On hand will be Bert the Salmon, worm bins and educational booths
showcasing environmentally friendly programs, services and products.
The expo kicks off with a short performance by Mad Science, a local
company that entertains children with interactive science-themed
demonstrations.
King County Executive Ron Sims will be there to talk about his
visionary plans to protect open space and resource lands, and to
present King County's prestigious Green Globe Awards to businesses,
organizations and individuals that are making an environmental difference
in the region.
Fun for all ages, adults too can be involved by visiting booths
representing businesses, community organizations, and government
groups working to protect and preserve the environment.
Scheduled activities include:
9:45 a.m. Children's performance by Mad
Science. Children from local childcare facilities are
invited to attend. Immediately following the show, children are
invited to learn how worms turn paper and food waste into a landscaping
resource.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bert the Salmon, the Puget
Sound's environmental mascot who has starred in television and
radio public service announcements, attended community festivals,
and is a prominent feature in many Puget Sound-area school science
curriculums. (All day)
10:30 a.m. Greenprint for King County press conference.
County Executive Ron Sims will outline King County's newly developed
forward-thinking strategy for identifying and protecting the county's
most important open space and resource lands.
11:00 a.m 12:15 p.m. Green Globe Award Ceremony
hosted by KIRO-TV's Penny LeGate with award presentation from
King County Executive Ron Sims. King County Executive Ron Sims
will present this prestigious award to 14 businesses and individuals
in recognition of their outstanding achievement in environmental
stewardship.
12:45 p.m. Children's performance by Mad Science.
Second show by science-related performers.
More than 15 exhibitors will provide a sampling
of green products and services including recycled content products,
reclaimed and salvaged materials and much more. Participating organizations
include the Environmental Protection Agency, King County Metro Transit
and the Department of Natural Resources and Parks.
