Grant money available for local projects that help salmon, environment

The
King County Water and Land Resources Division is offering six grant
programs in 2004 for projects involving watershed protection, habitat
restoration, reforestation, salmon conservation, natural resource
stewardship and related education efforts.
Community
groups, schools, and local governments may apply through the Water and
Land Resources Division Grant Exchange. Projects must be located in
King County or south Snohomish County watersheds that flow into Lake
Washington.
Examples
of 2003 grant recipients include: Adopt a Stream Foundation, Heron
Habitat Helpers, Homewaters Project/North Seattle Community College,
Mid-Puget Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group, and the City of Bothell.

March
1, 2004, is the deadline for grants above $2,000. Depending on the type
of project, maximum awards range from $10,000 to $75,000. There is no
deadline for grants up to $2,000.

Below is a list of King County's Grant Exchange programs:
Community
Salmon Fund:
This
fund awards grants up to $75,000 to restore salmon habitat on private
property in King County and South Snohomish basins that drain into the
Sammamish River or Lake Washington. Grants are competitive only and
applicants must be non-profit organizations or local government. This
year the fund has $606,000 in grant awards. There will be at least one
cycle in 2004 but no deadlines have been set.
Natural Resources Stewardship Network:
This
fund awards grants up to $40,000 for urban reforestation projects
inside Urban Growth Area. Emphasis is under-served areas. This year the
fund has $150,000 in grant awards.
Rural Community Partnership Grant:
This
fund awards grants up to $35,000 for water quality, drainage and
water-dependent Habitat. Projects must be located Inside the Rural
Drainage Program Service Area and serve unincorporated areas. This year
the fund has $80,000 in grant awards.
SPLASH: (page removed)
This
fund awards grants up to $15,000 for water quality education projects
anywhere in King County and South Snohomish County basins that drain
into the Sammamish River. This year the fund has $110,000 in grant
awards.
WaterWorks:
This
fund awards grants up to $60,000 for projects that improve or preserve
water quality and water-dependent habitat. Projects must be located
within King County's Wastewater Division Treatment Service Area
(includes portions of South Snohomish County). This year the fund has
$549,081 in grant awards.
Wild Places in City Spaces: (the Urban Reforestation and Habitat Restoration Fund)
This
fund awards grants up to $10,000 for urban wildlife habitat and
reforestation projects located inside the Urban Growth Area This year
the fund has $46,000 in grant awards.
