Message from the director Christie True, Department of Natural Resources and Parks
At King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks (DNRP), the key functions of protecting human health, safeguarding the environment and enriching the quality of life in King County remain constant, yet we are committed to continued change and improvement.
King County's unsurpassed quality of life flows from its great natural beauty and diversity.
Within the county's 2,121 square miles are hundreds of lakes and wetlands, 800,000 acres of forests, thousands of miles of streams and 100 miles of marine coastline. Our environment supports a half-dozen salmon species, more than 150 breeding bird species, large mammals such as bear, elk and deer, and numerous amphibians and reptiles.
King County is also home to a population approaching two million people, ranking it 14th among U.S. counties. Providing vital services to our residents while ensuring continued protection and stewardship of our unique environment is a challenge that DNRP's employees strive to achieve every day. This work has grown in its importance during the current economic downturn.
There are tremendous challenges — and opportunities — in natural resource management. King County leads the way in responding to climate change, salmon recovery, Puget Sound restoration and creating resources from waste through recycling and other methods.
DNRP uses performance information to improve service delivery, get feedback on customer priorities, and improve accountability with the elected leadership, stakeholders and the public.
To understand how our efforts are influencing environmental and community conditions, we track and report on aquatic, land and resources, health and safety, resource consumption and atmosphere indicators.
To guide strategy and allocation of resources, we track program performance with measures that describe the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of our efforts.
Thanks for visiting our department. Let us know how we may be of assistance.
Christie True Director DNRP
