Plan Your Giving

The King County Employee Giving Program charitable campaign is an avenue for King County employees to plan charitable giving. Similar to planning for your retirement, the charitable campaign allows you to determine the amount and frequency of your annual charitable donations. You decide what amount fits within your family’s budget and which participating nonprofit organizations reflect your values.

Benefits of donating through the Employee Giving Program

Control. You control the amount, frequency and destination of your charitable donations.

Documentation.By donating through the Employee Giving Program annual charitable campaign, you will receive documentation of your gift in the following ways:

  1. Copy of your pledge form.New tax laws require that employees retain a copy of their pledge forms for tax purposes.
  2. Pay stub. For employees using payroll deduction and/or time donation, the last pay stub of the year lists the total amount of charitable deductions taken over the course of the calendar year. This number reflects the total amount of charitable deductions taken from your check including all organizations to which you donate. It is not broken down by nonprofit organization.
  3. Acknowledgement from the nonprofit organization(s).
  4. Employees who donated to nonprofit organizations via payroll deduction or time donation will receive acknowledgement from the nonprofit organizations to which they donated. Written acknowledgement will be sent by the nonprofit organization to the employee after January 1st of the following year.

EX: Employees who turned in pledge forms in October/ November 2007 had payroll deductions taken in 2008 and will receive a letter from the nonprofit organization after January 1, 2008.

Employees who chose to donate anonymously to participating nonprofit organizations will not receive confirmation of donations from the participating nonprofit organizations.

Acknowledgement from the EGP is available upon request from the EGP Administrator.

Tax deductible donations. King County Finance and Business Operations will calculate the net cash value of time donations. You will receive a receipt after the net cash value of your donation has been sent to your designated nonprofit organization. Save your receipt; your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Anonymity. If you would like to donate to a nonprofit organization, but would not like your name released to the participating organization, you can choose not to release your name. Simply note your preference in section 3 of the donation form.

Pre-screened organizations. The Employee Giving Program committee screens all participating organizations to ensure that they meet our criteria.

Flexibility. King County employees can choose to donate to up to as many participating nonprofits as they like, including up to six participating nonprofit organizations by payroll deduction. Whether you choose to give via payroll deduction, vacation or comp time donation, a one time gift, or a combination of the three, employees enjoy flexibility in charitable giving.

Internal administration. The King County Employee Giving Program is run by King County employees for King County employees. A full time administrator, loaned campaign executives and over 200 volunteers make this program happen. A 9% administrative fee is charged to employee charitable donations. That 9% is the entire budget for the following year’s program. If you have questions about the administrative fee, please contact the Employee Giving Program Administrator at employeegiving@kingcounty.gov.
